Backgrounds: Our purpose is to demonstrate the making of a silicone orthosis for scar management in burn injuries. Pressure therapy is used to control the growth of hypertrophic scars resulting from severe burn injuries, which is especially important for scars to the face and hand.
Methods: Silicone orthosis were applied on Twenty seven burn patients. We review the change of scar condition after orthosis application.
Results: Wearing a clear facemask and glove provides better pressure over the contoured surface of the face and hand. With a step-by-step visualization of the silicone orthosis fabrication, the process will be more understandable to burn patients and their families. It can be used to control the contracture in finger joint. Silicone orthosis have a good outcome to control the hypertrophic scar condition. Silicone orthosis provide better pressure over the contoured surfaces of the face, neck and hand in the management of hypertrophic scarring.
Conclusions: Customized silicone post burn orthosis enhances scar management and social acceptance for patients with burn injuries. (Journal of Korean Burn Society 2007;10:146-150)
